Sony Pictures confirmed at CinemaCon in April that a sequel to 2018’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is in the works. And now we have a release date for it: 20 December 2023.
Director Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan have both stated this month that they would be returning for the live-action sequel, and that they plan to return to New York City and the firehouse setting of the original film, as was teased in the 2021 film’s closing titles.
Reitman previously told The Hollywood Reporter, “In the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ecto-1 is driving into Manhattan, returning to its home.” We dubbed it Rust City long before the name Afterlife was coined. Which no one would have understood unless they had seen the film. In the film industry, the title “Firehouse” is a code word for a forthcoming production.

Release Date Of Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Even though Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s first trailer dropped and in theatres at a much later date than originally planned due to pandemic delays, Sony is already planning to make up for lost time with the sequel. Sony has added the sequel to the calendar with a projected theatrical release date of December 20th, 2023, after director Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan confirmed the sequel earlier this month.
When the December 2021 release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife made over $200 million globally, a sequel was inevitable. In addition to the film sequel, Reitman and Kenan are also making an animated Ghostbusters series for Netflix.
Since both Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (directed by Patty Jenkins) and the next Star Trek film (working title TBD) are due for release on December 22, 2023, this film will have to compete with two other blockbusters. Cast Of Ghostbusters: Afterlife
It’s safe to presume that several of the actors from the first film will return for the sequel. Including Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard. In Afterlife, we learned that Winston Zeddemore had become an extremely wealthy businessman. He also took the Ecto-1 back to New York and reacquired the Ghostbusters’ firehouse headquarters, setting in motion the events of this story.
Director Ivan Reitman said in an interview with io9 last year, “One thing I wanted to do [with Afterlife] is set the table for Ghostbusters as a franchise to have various kinds of movies.” The majority of those flicks sound fantastic, and I’d love to check them out. In addition, we must take action that lays the groundwork for future narrative development by completing the original 1984 plot. I’m looking forward to both scary and comedic flicks.
I’d like to see more films starring the original actors and actresses. I’d like to see more films whose main characters are folks we haven’t met yet. I’m eager to explore other universes.
