If you’ve seen the first season of “Next Level Chef,” Gordon Ramsay’s latest cooking competition. You know that it’s unlike any other show of its kind. Fifteen chefs compete for a $250,000 prize and the chance to learn from Gordon Ramsay, Nyesha Arrington, and Richard Blais. The contestants must not only prepare delectable meals. But, also overcome the difficulties presented by not one, not two but three distinct kitchens before the final round.

The basement kitchen is the worst possible working environment for a cook. Imagine crooked pots and pans, plastic silverware, and a lack of any sophisticated equipment. There is a regular commercial kitchen in the middle. It has all the essentials but none of the frills of a kitchen in a restaurant or catering firm.

Then there’s the kitchen up in the penthouse. A shiny metropolis of modern cooking technology. Stocked to the ceiling with the finest pots and pans and every conceivable appliance. The chefs are never told which kitchen they will be working in. But they are expected to create a spectacular dish each week regardless of where they are.

Pyet DeSpain, on the other hand, claimed she was most at ease in the centre kitchen. She told us, “I feel the most at home there… I’ve worked at kitchens like that, your basic culinary kitchen at restaurants”. Why this particular kitchen was her favourite. Having that level of ease is understandable when working with such tight constraints as 30 minutes. Few ingredients, and tough rivals.

Simply put, nothing but your own wits and abilities can bring you through to the next phase. She reflected, “It was quite nerve-wracking, and you do have to be so inventive in those kitchens.” “You’re not going to do well in that competition if you don’t have that creative skill set or that creative flow within you.”

Kansas City, Kansas native Stephanie “Pyet” Despain won the $250,000 grand prize. A year of mentoring from each of the three celebrity chefs. And the title of Next Level Chef for Season 1. Pyet, a former member of Team Nyesha, won over the judges with her dish. Which included pig and sweet potato empanadas, seared striped bass with spiced sweet potato purée. And roasted rack of lamb with fingerling potatoes, prosciutto wrapped green beans, and a red wine reduction.
