Benjamin Franklin was the man responsible for the design of the very first penny, which was minted in the year 1787.
The penny that bears the image of Abraham Lincoln, who served as president of the United States from 1861 to 1865, was first struck at a mint in 1909 and distributed to the public on February 12, 1909, to mark the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth.
The penny that we are familiar with today was first minted in 1909. Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith, the woman who came up with the concept of National Lost Penny Day,
explained in a log post that she wrote about her idea that she was trying to demonstrate that “Petty change can make an astounding difference.”
This is a message that is indeed positive, and one that we can suspect Honest Abe himself would have supported. In point of fact, one of the most famous quotes attributed to Abraham Lincoln is “I walk slowly, but I never walk backward.”

On National Lost Penny Day, you should search your home thoroughly, including your couch, the pockets of old coats
you haven’t worn in years, and every other nook and cranny you can think of, in the hopes of finding as many pennies (or loose change, in general) as you possibly can.
If you have kids, you could even make the hunt into an elaborate game and have a contest to see who can find the most coins that are lying around the house collecting dust.
After you have finished turning your house upside down, it will be time to tally up all of the loose change that you and your children have unearthed and determine a winner.
