Eileen Shafer, the superintendent of schools in Paterson, said in a statement that Clark “demanded more from his students because he believed they could achieve more than what was expected of them” Clark “left his indelible mark on public education by being fiercely devoted to the students in his care,” Shafer said.

On May 8, 1938, Clark was born in Rochelle, Georgia; but, when he was a child, his family relocated to Newark, New Jersey.
It was reported by his family that his time spent as a drill sergeant in the United States Army “ingrained in him a respect for order and achievement,” qualities that would later come to define his more than three-decade long career in education.
According to a letter written by Clark’s family, he turned down an opportunity from President Ronald Reagan to work as a policy advisor at the White House because of his “dedication to his pupils and community.”
Clark “lost his lengthy fight with disease” and passed away at his home in Gainesville, Florida, accompanied by his family, according to the statement made by his relatives.
