Sony has announced that they will bring the suspenseful and terrifying survival horror video game The Last of Us to HBO in January 2023. This news comes nine years after they first stated that they would be developing a movie out of the 2013 video game, and seven years after those plans were scrapped.
The events of The Last of Us take place in the year 2033, which is 20 years after a fungal infection of the brain wiped out the majority of the world’s population.
This infection initially drives its victims violently insane and feral, and later destroys their eyes, which forces them to use echo-location to find people and rip out their throats. Here is everything that we know about the highly anticipated adaptation of the original story so far.
Is The Last Of Us Based On A Book
Several people consider The Last of Us to be among the best works of fiction to appear in the early 2010s. In the wake of a global pandemic, an unlikeable team embarks on a journey throughout the United States in pursuit of salvation.
HBO will produce a TV adaptation of The Last of Us because the story’s premise is more timely now than when it was written.
Although a book by the same name has been written by Brett A. Hansen, it isn’t the first publication of this tale.
Tough male survivor Joel Miller is recruited in The Last of Us to guide a young woman named Ellie to some physicians who think she may hold the key to ending the disease.
They travel from the ruins of Boston to the ruins of Salt Lake City, encountering roving bands of infected, cannibals, big jerks, and even a fugitive giraffe from a zoo who wants to get away while the getting is good.
The programme is adapting the first game, but it will also likely include certain details from the sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which is set five years after the original game.
Nevertheless, it’s more likely that they’ll take inspiration from the prequel to The Last of Us, which focuses on Ellie and takes place before the events of the original game.
But, the show will reportedly provide new details to the game’s tale that weren’t included in the original release. Co-creator and writer Craig Mazin said of his Naughty Dog colleague in an interview for the webcast BBC Sounds’ “Must Watch” in July 2020,
“Neil [Druckmann], at one point, he was like, ‘You know, there’s one thing we were talking about [doing in the first game] for a while,’ and then he told me what it was, and I was like — gonk! Okay, that’s going to make you drop your jaw. In other words, we have to do it.
So the adjustments that we’re making are meant to flesh things out and extend,” Mazin added. To improve, not diminish; “It’s not like we just decided, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be wonderful if there’s one episode where Joel and Ellie hop on motorcycles and confront a biker gang?’
All the episodes are connected and make sense. I believe that both longtime players and newbies to the game will like the organic, serious connections between the game’s new and improved story elements.

Who Stars In It?
It’s only fitting that the confirmed cast thus far includes some video game stalwarts, including a certain familiar zombie. Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian) was cast as Joel, Ellie’s father, because of his voice work as Paolo in the 2016 stealth action game Dishonored 2.
Bella Ramsey (also of Thrones) will play Ellie, because of her role as Freya in Doctor Who Infinity: The Dalek Invasion of Time.
Gabriel Luna (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Terminator: Dark Fate), who appeared in the game BlackSite: Area 51, will play Joel’s younger brother Tommy, and Anna Torv (Fringe, Mindhunter; pictured above),
who voiced Nariko in the action game Heavenly Sword, and in the eponymous animated movie based on that game, will play Joel’s smuggling partner, Tess.
Other cast members include Storm Reid (Euphoria), who will play Ellie’s friend Riley; Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjacket), who will play a new character named Kathleen who leads a revolutionary group based in Kansas City;
Lamar Johnson (Dark Phoenix) as Henry; Keivonn Woodard (a newcomer) as Sam; Graham Green (Dances with Wolves) and Elaine Miles (Northern Exposure) as Marlon

Who Is Developing The Series?
Names from the games will appear in the show. As one of the show’s co-creators alongside Mazin, Druckmann is also likely to write or co-write several episodes, given his background as the writer and co-director of both the original game and its recently released sequel.
and Naughty Dog’s CEO and showrunner Evan Wells, who also worked on The Last of Us games, is also involved.
Gustavo Santaolalla, who has scored both games and numerous television shows including Jane the Virgin and Making a Murderer, will also contribute to the show’s musical atmosphere with Druckmann and Wells.
Asad Qizilbash, who worked on the Uncharted movie and is credited for his work on other Sony games like Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, and other God of War titles, will serve as co-executive producer.

Besides the movie based on the Uncharted games from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us show is their only other announced production and their first for television.
