If you’ve been watching Chicago Fire since it first aired and have been following Lieutenant Kelly Severide’s adventures in Firehouse 51, you may be curious about Taylor Kinney’s departure and the real reason he’s leaving the show after more than a decade.
The fictitious Firehouse 51 of the Chicago Fire Department is the setting for the NBC drama Chicago Fire, which follows the personal and professional lives of the firemen, rescue workers, and paramedics that work there.
In the first season of Chicago Fire, Kinney debuted as Lieutenant Kelly Severide, an officer in charge of Squad 3 at Firehouse 51.
In a 2023 interview, Kinney said he didn’t have any “worry” before his Chicago Fire tryout. I did a lot of auditions and was really good at it,” he remarked. In all my life, I don’t recall ever feeling nervous or worried. I was enthusiastic about it, but ultimately the decision was left to the higher-ups. He went on, saying, “[The audition] went well, and 10 years later I’m still here pestering you through your televisions while you fold laundry.”

Taylor Kinney Is Leaving Chicago Fire
In September of 2022, after Jesse Spencer had left the show to focus on other endeavours, Season 11 began airing. He came back as the best man for Kelly’s wedding to Stella Kidd at the end of Season 10, and then he disappeared again. The news of Taylor’s departure from the show immediately spread.
Taylor’s character, who has developed a penchant for investigating fire-related crimes, was sent off to “the top arson investigation training programme in the world” on Wednesday’s (March 1) episode. Kelly was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by Captain Tom Van Meter, who also reassured his team that they will see their beloved lieutenant again in the not-too-distant future.
Tom told Wallace Boden, “that doesn’t mean he’s considering a transfer to OFI” throughout the episode. And I realise it will be a strain on the resources of this home for some time. But the knowledge Severide brings back to Section 51 will help the entire division.

Why Is Taylor Kinney Leaving Chicago Fire?
In January 2023, a production insider revealed to Deadline that Kinney was taking a “leave of absence” from Chicago Fire to deal with a “personal situation,” suggesting that he would eventually return. The cast and crew of Chicago Fire were reportedly told of Kinney’s leave on January 20, 2023, and future scripts would be revised to account for Kinney’s absence, as reported by Deadline.
During the tenth and last season of Chicago Fire in 2022, Kinney reflected on his decade-plus long run on the show in an interview with Us Weekly. To be a part of something that has lasted as long as this has is just remarkable.
His words: “It’s a credit to Dick Wolf, the team of people he puts together. He recently finished filming season 10. Which should be taken as a clue. For the eleventh season, I can’t wait. I have no idea where they plan to take it because I have no access to the scripts. Not sure what it is, but I can’t wait to find out!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published before the 2019 season 5 finale of Chicago Fire, Kinney discussed the length of time he has spent on the show. Perhaps during my time off I’ll be able to take a deep breath and take stock of all that’s happened,” he mused. “But it’s amazing to think that we began so long ago, and especially network series, most of these don’t even make it past the pilot.”
NBC On Taylor Kinney’s Leave
When asked about Kinney’s departure and possible comeback, NBC declined to comment.
Kinney has been the hero of the hit NBC franchise Chicago for 11 seasons and over 200 episodes.
The series was conceived by procedural king Dick Wolf and Universal Television’s Derek Haas, and has since become an important part of the network’s and studio’s library in the age of streaming services. It was renewed for three more seasons in 2020, making the current eleventh season the first of that span.

Storytelling, pacing, character development, production values, and assembling a stellar cast and crew are all things I picked up from observing Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski.”
Star Jesse Spencer bowed out of the series in 2021, after 200 episodes. He made a brief return in the Season 10 finale, when Severide wed Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo).
