What Happened To Melissa Gilbert?

Little House on the Prairie aired from 1974 to 1983, and Melissa Gilbert is likely best remembered for her portrayal of Laura Ingalls Wilder in the show. During the show’s first live run, she became arguably the most well-known child actor in the world. Gilbert made her acting debut in the 1960s with a small, uncredited part in the film The Reluctant Astronaut.

While waiting for her breakout role, she continued to star in TV movies including The Miracle Worker and The Diary of Anne Frank. Through the rest of the ’80s and into the ’90s, she continued to act in TV movies and guest-star on a variety of series.

What Happened To Melissa Gilbert

After undergoing spine surgery in November that she describes as “life-changing,” Melissa Gilbert is now opening out about her recovery.

The actress, who is 56 years old and has been dealing with neck and back injuries for about 20 years, said the previous month that her surgeon was able to give her an artificial disc rather than fusing her vertebrae during her most recent operation.

Gilbert reported that she is experiencing “very good” recovery over three weeks after undergoing surgery.

She stated on Tuesday’s episode of “Good Morning America” that she had “made a bit of a turn” the previous weekend.

She went on to explain, “I just kind of had achy soreness and I woke up after a great shoulder rub from my hubby on Saturday.” “When I woke up on Sunday morning, I noticed that I had made some progress in my recovery, and the doctor later confirmed that this was the case. He initially estimated two weeks, then four weeks, and finally three months; the entire process and subsequent recovery have been quite remarkable.”

Gilbert, who became famous as “Half-Pint” Laura Ingalls Wilder on “Little House on the Prairie,” has undergone three spinal fusion surgeries since 2001. The first was performed on her neck due to an injury. The second was performed on her back after she broke it in 2010.

She previously told People that her third operation was necessary because of two ruptured discs in her spine, the result of head and neck traumas sustained in 2012. She claimed that she hurt herself while dancing in a 2012 “Dancing With the Stars” competition.

What Is Melissa Gilbert Doing Now?

Her first recurring part was on Stand by Your Man in 1992, and she would go on to have a similar role in Batman: The Animated Series that same year. Sweet Justice (1994) and Babylon 5 (1996) followed with additional recurrent roles.

In the new millennium, Melissa Gilbert was back in TV movies, and in 2015, he had a recurring part on the show Secrets and Lies. When We Last Spoke, a movie released in 2019, was the last time we saw her.

She had wonderful recollections of Michael Landon’s audition for the role of Little House. The portrayal of Little Joe Cartwright on Bonanza catapulted him to stardom. She recalled him having a “captivating” glow that drew her in at the audition. She said, “It’s clichéd to say, but he had me at hello,” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. I had not yet turned nine years old. That’s very understandable.

Both Gilbert and Landon’s off-screen connection with Michael would mirror their on-screen one. Gilbert, who would lose her own father when she was 11 years old, spent most of her time off from the Little House set with Landon and his real-life family.

While 2019 was the year we last saw Gilbert in a film, she hasn’t been keeping a low profile online. Together with her husband, Timothy Busfield, she has been producing and promoting a new podcast. In one episode, they discuss her time spent filming Little House. It would appear that she still holds fond memories of the Little House series.
