Day Commemorating The National Holiday Honoring The Freedom To Marry

On February 12, Americans commemorate National Freedom to Marry Day, a holiday that honors the right to wed a partner of the same gender.

This unofficial holiday has been advocating for love and equal rights to marriage for members of the LGBTQ community ever since it was first celebrated in 1999.

The movement has made significant progress, but the problem of normalizing marriages between people of the same gender is far from resolved.

An absolute marital union between any couple identifying as LGBTQ should be completely acceptable. This is true even though an increasing number of countries are now permitting a modified form of marriage to be performed between couples of the same sex.

(PRESS RELEASE) — (NEW YORK, January 12, 1998) — The 12th of February in 1998 has been designated as the day set aside to celebrate National Freedom to Marry Day.

Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights are just some of the organizations that make up the National Freedom to Marry Coalition.

The Task Force and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation aren’t the only Gay & Lesbian organizations out there; the ACLU is among them.

L.A.’s Gay and Lesbian Community Center, the National Organization of Women, and the Parents, Friends, and Family of Lesbians and Gays all came together to form Advocates and Defenders.

The Gay & Lesbian Center is just one of the many local organizations that has publicly declared its support for LGBT rights.

Why on the 12th of February? Just two words: love and equal treatment. The birthday of Abraham Lincoln is a time to reflect on issues of equality, and Valentine’s Day is a time to reflect on romantic love.

To put it another way, there is no better day than today to bring attention to the significance of abolishing sex discrimination in marriage and enabling lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender couples to

participate equally in the festivities, rights, and responsibilities associated with civil marriage.

Putting A Ring Around It

On National Freedom to Marry Day, many of the events will revolve around the Marriage Resolution, which is a statement of support for equal marriage rights that has been endorsed by a large number of organizations, prominent individuals, and members of the clergy.

In addition to revealing the names of new allies and presenting couples and families for whom the Freedom to Marry is of critical importance, organizers are asking allies from acrossthe nation to “Tie the Knot” in a show of solidarity.

“Tying the Knot” will involve tying ribbons into knots around various objects such as trees, lamp posts, buildings, door knobs, and automobile antennae. It is requested of individuals that they tie a knot around their ring finger or arm, or that they wear a knot on their lapel.

How To Celebrate The Day Honoring The Right To Wed

“Tying the Knot” was a way for people to show their support for free marriage on Freedom to Marry Day back in the days before the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that marriage between people of the same sexual orientation is a constitutionally protected right.

Someone would take a ribbon and tie knots in it around various objects such as trees, lamp posts, buildings, doorknobs, and car antennae. Individuals could also wear a knot on their lapel, tie a knot around their ring finger or arm, or tie a knot around their ring finger.
