Early Life

He was the son of Arminta and J.W. Jones, and he was born in Los Angeles. Jones was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and raised there with his family.

In 1967, he was offered the chance to purchase the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League, but he declined.

He got his master’s degree in business in 1970 and tried his hand at a number of different businesses before finally finding his footing when he started an oil and gas exploration company in Oklahoma. Over the course of the next two decades, his business expanded rapidly, and he set up shop in major cities across the western United States and even in Canada.
